The Billionaires' Pact and the Real Science of Longevity
Forget the secret chalet. The serious version of the longevity story is the NIH's Interventions Testing Program — and its scoreboard rewards the boring, cheap drugs.

There's a story that longevity insiders love to tell. In the late 1990s, so it goes, a handful of billionaires gathered in a private chalet at Davos and quietly admitted the one thing their fortunes could not buy — more time. Each pledged tens of millions to a shared mission: find the fastest routes to radical longevity. Their supposed agenda reads like a first draft of modern biohacking — resveratrol, metformin, telomerase, stem cells.
Whether the meeting happened as described hardly matters. Like every durable myth, it distills a real truth: wealth and influence are converging on the science of aging. But the serious version of that story isn't a secret chalet. It's a rigorously controlled, publicly funded experiment called the Interventions Testing Program (ITP), run by the U.S. National Institute on Aging.
The ITP tests compounds for their effect on lifespan in genetically diverse mice, at three independent labs at once. A result only counts if it survives all three — which is exactly why so many hyped molecules have died inside it. Here's the scoreboard as it stands today.
Reproducibly extended lifespan: rapamycin (the strongest, in both sexes), acarbose, 17-alpha-estradiol, the diabetes drug canagliflozin, glycine, and several newer entries — most of them, intriguingly, working only in males.
Tested and failed: resveratrol (the molecule that launched a thousand supplements), metformin on its own, nicotinamide riboside, and fisetin — the senolytic darling.
Two lessons jump out. First, the winners are strikingly ordinary — repurposed diabetes drugs, an amino acid, an estrogen variant. The real longevity pharmacy, so far, is hiding in plain sight and much of it is cheap. Second, being popular is not the same as being proven. The myth and the ITP share one heartbeat: the belief that aging is not immutable. The difference is that one runs on rumor, and the other runs on data.
